CHICAGO (AP) — Grain futures were mostly lower Monday in early trading on the Chicago Board of Trade. Miami-Dade students are days away from the new school year and the district is working to ensure their safety with active shooter drills. At 10 a.m. Monday, police officials in the county hosted training exercises to guarantee students will know what to do when an active shooter enters their school. Authorities started as early as 8 a.m. setting up a perimeter in preparation for the drill.Gunshots, as real as they can get, rang out at Miami Senior High School for a training simulation to get students prepared for the worst. Students were bandaged and covered in makeup resembling gunshot wounds as police officers pretending to be school shooters ran across halls and classrooms. A former aide to Miami Mayor Francis Suarez was sentenced to 6 years in federal prison on Monday after he pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography. Rene Pedrosa will have 15 years of supervised release following his sentence. 7News cameras captured Pedrosa as he left the Miami Federal Courthouse following his sentence, neither he nor his lawyers chose to comment.Pedrosa, 51, apologize to the court and the victim’s family for his actions. He admitted to receiving pornographic materials from a 16-year-old boy in 2019. He entered a guilty plea on May 24, 2023, for his actions. Court documents stated that Pedrosa connected with a male teenager in November 2019 on social media for a potential web design position for Mayor Suarez. A blaze inside a Pembroke Pines condominium has left four families displaced, Monday. Around 11 a.m., Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue arrived at the scene after a fire broke out in a unit on the second floor of the New Hampton building at Century Village Condos, located at 301 SW 135th Ave. Live video footage showed a hose that was placed inside of the unit and light smoke exiting the building. Many residents were evacuated as fire officials were concerned about the adjacent rooms that surrounded the affected unit.While firefighters worked to control the flames, no injuries have been reported. A 35-year-old Quincy man accused of a “nightmarish attack” on a woman in the South End Saturday night before a Good Samaritan stepped in to defend the victim has been ordered held without bail, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.Amos Sykes is facing charges of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over, and assault and battery (injuries) following the weekend’s alleged attack in the area of W. Canton Street and Appleton Street.Sykes is accused of punching a woman in the head as he sat on top of her, several witnesses told Boston Police. SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Humane Society is sending their Emergency Response Team to Maui Monday to assist with the wildfires that have killed at least 96 people.The team will deploy at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the request of the Maui Humane Society, SDHS said. Once on the ground, the team will assist with search and rescue efforts, animal care, sheltering of large and companion animals and transports, SDHS spokesperson Nina Thompson said in a news release.
