Military leaders slam Sen. Tuberville over held-up promotions By Kevin Freking and Tara Copp | Associated PressWASHINGTON — Top defense officials are accusing Republican Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville of jeopardizing America’s national security with his hold on roughly 300 military promotions, raising the stakes in a clash over abortion policy that shows no signs of easing.Tuberville brushed off the criticism, vowing he will not give in. “We’re going to be in a holding pattern for a long time,” he said, if the Pentagon refuses to end its policy of paying for travel when a servicemember goes out of state to get an abortion or other reproductive care. It’s a classic Washington standoff with rippling effects across the country, placing the lives of servicemembers effectively on hold as they await what has traditionally been routine Senate approval for their promotions.Frustration mounting, the secretaries of the Navy, Air Force and Army wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post this week saying Tuberville’s efforts w...

Kurtenbach: The SF Giants have 10 games to save their bizarre season

Kurtenbach: The SF Giants have 10 games to save their bizarre season There’s a magnetism between these two forces that can’t be denied. It’s the stuff of paperback novels and soapy made-for-TV movies. The San Francisco Giants and a .500 record are cosmically intertwined, and after a bit of will-they-or-won’t-they drama over the last few months, they’re back together.(Five-hundred was telling folks they were just on a break.)If these Giants are a team of destiny, that destiny is to have a .500 record for a second straight season. That’s one way to look at the Giants’ recent play. The other way is a bit more maddening. It’s to say that the Giants, who at one point this summer looked destined for the playoffs (even if it was only a Wild Card berth) and perhaps a nice October run, have imploded. No matter if your perspective on the matter is rosy or begrudged, the fact remains that San Francisco still, somehow, has a chance to make something of this season. But if a turnaround is coming, it must start on Friday, ...

10 great books about California football, from the 49ers to Cal and De La Salle Ah, football season — the time of year when Americans spend countless hours observing super-sized men pummel each other on the gridiron. But, hey, we all need something to do while we’re not watching the sport. Why not read about it?We’ve tracked down some of the best football books with a Northern California bent. For the sake of conciseness (and our sanity), we have, for the most part, avoided single-subject biographies (there are a million of them) and X’s-and-O’s instructionals.Instead, the following books are more focused on capturing the history, passion, glory, craziness and drama of the game.10 great books about California football, from the 49ers to Cal, De La Salle and more. (Publisher) ‘Five Laterals and a Trombone: Cal, Stanford, and the Wildest Finish in College Football History’  by Tyler BridgesIn the immortal — and breathless — words of radio sportscaster Joe Starkey, it was “the most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heartrending, exciting finish in th...

And while the 49ers may not regret any of the money they’ve spent, the first season with a player who has signed for big money doesn’t always go as planned.“Everybody’s situation is different,” linebacker Fred Warner said Wednesday. “That’s part of the business side of it. Everybody thinks it’s all football, but when you get to that part of it, the business side takes over. Now that part of it is down he can just go out and play free.”A look at the first season after signing a big contract for six players the 49ers made the highest-paid players...

SF Giants push back Alex Cobb’s next start SAN FRANCISCO — Alex Cobb won’t pitch in his scheduled turn through the rotation this weekend, a concerning development for one of the Giants’ only three starting pitchers and for a team on the outside of the playoff picture looking in with 22 games remaining.Despite the three-game set against the Rockies looming as a must-win to maintain their fading postseason hopes, the Giants’ No. 2 starter isn’t scheduled to take the ball. Kyle Harrison will make his second start in front of the home fans on Friday, Logan Webb will start Saturday, and the club is listing Sunday’s starter as TBA.Cobb last pitched Sunday in San Diego, when he lasted only three innings while allowing four runs on two homers in a loss to the Padres. The clunker came five days after throwing a career-high 131 pitches in a complete game, coming one out shy of a no-hitter.Afterward, while Cobb said he wanted the ball on regular rest, he acknowledged it was “very fair to second guess...

Football video games are a time capsule

Football video games are a time capsule Sports video games are like time capsules — or portals to the past. With their rosters, playbooks and features, they capture and preserve a season in ones and zeroes, and at a press of a button, they bring that past to life.Since Nintendo’s release of 1989’s Tecmo Bowl, games have come to change how fans understand and interact with America’s favorite sport. The first great football game didn’t even have the NFL license when it was released. Tecmo Bowl’s teams were named by city, not team, but featured the colors of the corresponding NFL team. What they did have, though, was the NFL Players Association license, and that was enough. Fans could play as Joe Montana and throw to Jerry Rice. The first breakout star in NFL video games was the then-Los Angeles Raiders’ Bo Jackson. The running back was an unstoppable force in the game, and the way experts used him to outrun tacklers made him look otherworldly. Although his football career was cut shor...

Gavin Newsom says he is deploying more National Guard troops to the border to help fight the opioid crisis.According to the governor's office, anywhere from 40 to 60 additional soldiers will be sent to the four U.S. ports of entry along the California-Mexico border to support the interdiction of illicit drugs, especially fentanyl. Newsom believes U.S. Customs and Border Protection's narcotic search operations require further support in light of nearly a six-fold increase in the amount of seized fentanyl in California last year. The troops will operate vehicle X-ray systems used for detecting the transportation and concealment of narcotics and will not be involved with the interdiction or processing of migrants.
