The fired Oakland police chief is on a list of candidates to fill his old job. Does he have a chance?

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 00:18:12 GMT

OAKLAND — Nearly eight months after being fired, former Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong has clawed his way back onto an unofficial short list of candidates to be the city’s top cop.But this may be as far as he ever gets. Armstrong’s fate is once again in the hands of Mayor Sheng Thao, who fired him in February and has the final say in choosing his replacement. So despite three of the city’s police commissioners earlier this week publicizing the list, which included Armstrong and six other unnamed candidates, it is unlikely to gain any traction with the mayor’s office, especially not when the application deadline doesn’t expire until Friday. This latest, mostly symbolic showing of public support for Armstrong by outgoing chair Tyfahra Milele and two other commissioners further highlights the deep political divides that have emerged in Oakland around the former chief’s firing.Last month, an arbitrator who heard both sides of Armstrong’s app...

Will Saturday afternoon at Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium be a rude reality check for the Cal football team?Or can the progress made by the Bears’ offense — which jumped to a new level after Fernando Mendoza’s encouraging debut at quarterback — show some staying power against one of the nation’s best defensive teams?Although the Bears (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12) are 13.5-point underdogs against the 16th-ranked Utes (4-1, 1-1), there is an optimistic buzz surrounding the Cal offense we haven’t seen before during coach Justin Wilcox’s seven-year regime.“I’ve heard Utah is an electric atmosphere,” Mendoza said this week, “so I’m really looking forward to it. These are the moments you live for.”Cal fans hope this isn’t a case of be careful what you wish for. The Utes have won 17 in a row at home and will welcome their 80th consecutive sellout. The Bears lost 35-0 at Utah in their most recent meeting in 2019, and have not won in Salt Lake City since 1963.SALT LAKE CITY, UT – SEPTEMBER 16: A gene...

BRUSSELS (AP) — A European Union decision on whether to authorize the use of the controversial chemical herbicide glyphosate in the 27-nation bloc for at least 10 more years was delayed for a month after member countries failed to agree on Friday. The chemical, which is widely used in the 27-nation bloc, is approved on the EU market until mid-December. Representatives of the EU’s executive arm and member countries voted Friday in favor of renewing its authorization until 2033, despite protests from environmental groups. But to be adopted, the 10-year extension proposed by the European Commission required a “qualified majority,” defined as 55% of the 27 members representing at least 65% of the total EU population of some 450 million people. But several member states abstained and that was not achieved. The European Commission is now expected to amend its proposal before another vote takes place next month. Ultimately, if no consensus is found, the Commission will have the final say.Gr...
