Mets’ banged-up outfield stretched thin at Fenway

BOSTON — The Mets’ position player depth is severely depleted in Boston this weekend, which is bad news considering how difficult it is to navigate the Fenway Park outfield. The dimensions of the 111-year-old field make sense only because it’s a 111-year-old field. The outfield doesn’t mimic the curve of the infield at America’s Most Beloved Ballpark. Instead, a crooked outfield mimics the jagged streets of Boston, measuring 320 feet in the left field corner, 379 in left-center on the other end of the Green Monster, 420 in the center field corner and 380 in right field before it curves off into the stands.“It’s the toughest right field going,” said manager Buck Showalter. There is a lot of ground to cover in right field and the Mets are without their starting right fielder, Starling Marte, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with migraines Thursday. They’re also without left fielder Tommy Pham, and the Monster isn’t exa...Red Sox drop resumed series opener to Mets 5-4, win second game 8-6

Game 1: Mets win 5-4After hours of storms forced the Red Sox and Mets to suspend Friday night’s series opener with New York leading 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, the frenemy teams picked up exactly where they left off on Saturday afternoon.Fenway Park had a chance to dry out, but the home team still looked waterlogged when the game resumed. The Mets never relinquished their lead from the night before, and won 5-4.The innings played before the rain had been chaotic, and the mess continued on Saturday afternoon. The Boston bats came out strong in the first two frames, plating three runs on three hits, but the New Yorkers answered back immediately, with a leadoff doubles and 2-run homer in both the third and fourth. With Friday’s starting pitchers Kutter Crawford and Kodai Senga unavailable for the resumption, both teams turned to their bullpens.Alex Verdugo got back in the batter’s box; Senga had a 1-2 count against him when the game went into a delay on Friday nig...PHOTOS: Comic-Con cosplayers show off creativity

A sombre scene in Mississauga as friends and community members gathered for a candlelight vigil in honour of Gurvinder Nath, a food delivery driver who was killed in a violent carjacking earlier this month. Speakers who gathered at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre recalled a 24-year-old who came to Canada with a lot of dreams only to see his promising life cut short by violence.Peel police say Nath was making a delivery on Emerson Lane near Creditview and Britannia Roads around 2:10 a.m. on July 9 when he was confronted by several unknown suspects who tried to take his vehicle, leading to a physical altercation. The group of suspects fled the scene in Nath’s vehicle, leaving him at the side of the road with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a local trauma centre where he eventually died of his injuries five days later. For as good as Sonny Gray has been this season — and he was an All-Star who now boasts a 3.15 earned-run average — the veteran starter hasn’t won a game since April and the Twins haven’t won a game he has started in more than a month. That changed on Saturday.Gray still didn’t get an elusive win, though he certainly pitched well enough for one. Instead, he had the misfortune of facing White Sox ace Dylan Cease, who kept the Twins mostly quiet during his six-inning outing. It wasn’t until after both Gray and Cease left the game that the Twins broke through, scoring a pair of runs in the seventh inning to help them to a 3-2 win over the White Sox at Target Field.Catcher Christian Vázquez played a central role in the win, leading off the second inning with a double, scoring the team’s first run on a Carlos Correa double later in the second inning and then tying the game up in the seventh inning.Vázquez appeared to believe the ball was leaving the park, celebrating his hit as if it was a ...Ukrainian boys soccer team FC Minaj’s trip of a lifetime comes to an end

Andrii Ketsuk, a 16-year-old member of FC Minaj, a youth soccer team from Ukraine, is calling it a trip of a lifetime.“Being in the U.S. is like a different world,” added his 14-year-old teammate, Alexander (Sasha) Jarmoljuk.Come Tuesday, their temporary respite will be over; back to their war-torn country, back to the uncertainty and unease, back to reality. So, while FC Minaj lost 2-1 to the North United Soccer Club Platinum of Coon Rapids on Saturday in the boys U17 gold championship of the USA Cup at the National Sports Center in Blaine, players and coaches alike are grateful for their time in a community that they said welcomed them with open arms, and for a chance to live life as it was meant to be.“It’s been wonderful, because we are recovering from our trauma and stress,” said FC Minaj coach Rudolf Balazhinec. “To see, everyday, funerals for our soldiers, we are struggling emotionally, but at the same time (being here) is a little less stressful.“Sports bring joy, and healing...Clayton police, fire crews train for active shooter situations ahead of school year

CLAYTON, Mo. - The Clayton Police Department conducted active shooter training Saturday at Wydown Middle School, just weeks before families prepare for the start of the school year. The police department collaborated with the Clayton Fire Department and the Clayton School District. Officers say this training comes in addition to the active shooter training they do regularly. Protests over Francis Howell plan to allow anti-racism resolution to expire “It’s important that we work out all of the bugs in a situation like this," said Battalion Chief Ryan Harrell with the Clayton Fire Department. "Because if an incident were to happen like this, that’s not the time for us to try and figure out how we’re going to communicate, how we’re going to collaborate, how we’re going to work together on these types of things.” Clayton's entire fire and police departments were involved in Saturday's training. They also train regionally with other fire and police depart...Orange County couple battles cancer together while raising 3 daughters
